A prenup is usually created to determine how finances and assets will be distributed in the event of a separation. This type of agreement sets out what will happen to financial and property assets if the couple decide to go their separate ways.

A postnuptial agreement

If you are already married or in a civil partnership, you can arrange a postnuptial agreement (or postnup). As with a prenup, a postnup enables a couple to agree what would happen to assets if they were to get divorced or become separated. These kinds of agreements are particularly valuable if one partner has a greater amount of money and/or property than the other, or is expecting an inheritance, as they allow you to protect certain assets that you want to keep in the event of a divorce or separation.
