ELIGIBILITY FOR CRIMINAL INJURY COMPENSATION

If you or a loved one has been injured or someone has been killed as a result of violent crime, then you may be eligible to claim compensation. You usually have 2 years to make a claim, and the crime needs to be reported to the police. You may be eligible if:

  • A close relative died

  • You suffered injury

  • You witnessed a loved one being injured, or you were present immediately afterwards

  • You paid for the funeral of a victim

  • You were injured whilst trying to prevent a crime taking place

Crown Prosecution Service

If you want to be awarded compensation as a result of a violent crime and the criminal has been convicted, tell the police detailed information about any damage or loss you have suffered. The police will inform the Crown Prosecution Service, who will make the request of the court. You can be compensated for:

  • Being off work

  • Medical expenses

  • Personal injury

  • Travel expenses

  • Pain and suffering

  • Losses from theft or damage to property

  • Losses from fraud

  • Loss, damage or injury caused by a stolen vehicle.

Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority

You can also apply for compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). In order to be eligible, the crime needs to be less than 2 years old and was immediately reported to the police. The process is lengthy and complex, but we will be able to support you through the process. You will need medical evidence to support your claim if you wish to claim for physical or mental injury.
