Change of name

If you want to change your name, call Cleaver Thompson Solicitors in Alfreton and Clay Cross.

Legally changing your name

It isn’t necessary to legally change your name, however if you want to change official papers such as your driving licence or passport, you will need to apply for a deed poll. We can help guide you through the process of legally changing your name.

UNENROLLED VS ENROLLED

Although you can change your name yourself with an ‘unenrolled deed poll’, some banks and other organisations may not accept this and require you to change your name with an ‘enrolled deed poll’ instead. For example, if you wished to apply for a job that required a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) clearance, such as working with children or vulnerable adults, you will need to advise your potential employer.

Fulfill all legal requirements

To apply for an ‘enrolled’ deed poll simply means that you’re putting your new name on public record. At Cleaver Thompson Solicitors we can ensure that your name is changed properly and fulfils all legal requirements. An enrolled deed poll or statutory declaration is more likely to be accepted by organisations such as a bank or an employer. If you wish to change your children’s name, simply contact our team for more information.

Marriage or civil partnership

If you get married or enter into a civil partnership, you don’t need a deed poll to change your name – sending a copy of your civil partnership or marriage certificate to organisations such as a bank or local government will be sufficient for them to change their records. If the marriage or civil partnership ends and you wish to change your name back, you may be able to send the organisations your decree absolute or your final order, though they may need you to apply for a deed poll.
